A unique Vincentian Christmas tradition with early-morning celebrations. Nine Mornings in St. Vincent is a unique, century-old Christmas festival held from December 16th to December 24th, featuring pre-dawn street concerts, sea baths, and community light-ups.
Origins
Nine mornings is rooted in a mix of old religious traditions and local folklore. During the festival, communities across St. Vincent and the Grenadines gather in town squares—such as Heritage Square in Kingstown—to celebrate their shared cultural identity right up until Christmas Eve morning
Festival Highlights
- Early Morning Wake-ups: Participants rise as early as 4:00 AM under the popular slogan “Stop the Yawning, We Going Nine Mornings!”
- Activities: Traditional sea bathing, bicycle riding, street parades, steel pan performances, and robust community concerts.
- Competitions: Island-wide village lighting, house decorating, and caroling contests.
